Automatic and DSG gearbox repair cost: why it runs higher

Updated

An automatic gearbox quote is three quotes wearing a coat: the mechanical rebuild, the electronics, and the software work that makes the car accept the result.

Where the extra money goes

The torque converter
On a conventional automatic this is a separate assembly that is normally replaced or reconditioned alongside the box. Reusing a suspect converter after a rebuild is a common route back to the same fault.
The mechatronic unit
On dual-clutch boxes such as DSG, DCT and PowerShift, the valve body and control electronics are one serviceable assembly. Many failures diagnosed as gearbox failures are actually mechatronic failures, which is a different and usually smaller job.
Fluid, filter and cleanliness
Automatics are sensitive to the correct specification of fluid and to a clean fill. This is a real line on an honest quote, not padding.
Coding and adaption
Modern automatics and dual-clutch boxes need software adaption after fitting, and sometimes coding to the car. A quote without it is not a complete quote.

WorkTypical range
Diagnosis, road test and fault code readUsually an hour or two of labour, often credited against the repair
Automatic fluid and filter serviceA fraction of a rebuild, and the first thing to try on harsh shifts
Reconditioned automatic gearbox, supplied and fitted£1,500–£3,000
Dual-clutch rebuild or replacement, supplied and fitted£2,000–£4,000
Clutch pack only on a dual-clutch boxBelow a full replacement, but still a gearbox-out job on most cars

Diagnose before you buy a gearbox

  • Limp mode and a warning light often point at a sensor, a solenoid or the mechatronic unit rather than worn gears.
  • Harsh or flaring shifts can follow degraded fluid, especially on a box that has never been serviced.
  • Judder from a standstill on a dual-clutch box usually points at the clutch pack, which is a smaller job than a full rebuild.
  • Whining that changes with road speed rather than engine speed is more likely a bearing or a driveline component than the gearbox internals.
  • Get the fault codes in writing. They travel with you to a second opinion, and a second opinion on a £3,000 job is cheap.

Ranges here are typical 2026 UK quotes for common cars and vary widely. Prestige and performance models sit above them. Use the form to get numbers for your actual car and fault.

Questions, answered directly

How much does it cost to fix an automatic gearbox in the UK?

There is no official price. Typical 2026 quotes to supply and fit a reconditioned automatic run roughly £1,500–£3,000, and £2,000–£4,000 for a dual-clutch box, both varying widely by vehicle. Before committing, pay for diagnosis: limp mode and harsh shifts are often electronic or fluid faults rather than a failed gearbox.

Why is DSG gearbox repair so expensive?

Three costs stack up: the mechanical work, the mechatronic unit and clutch pack, and the coding and adaption the car needs after fitting. On most cars the box has to come out for any of it, so the 4–10 hours of removal and refit labour is spent whichever component turns out to be at fault.
